Keynote: Social Justice and Advocacy in Counselling Psychology

Social Justice & Advocacy as Counselling Psychologists title screenshotted

My opening keynote, "Social Justice and Advocacy in Counselling Psychology," was all about getting real about what social justice actually looks like in our therapeutic work and in the broader community. We dove deep into how understanding our clients' diverse experiences isn't just "nice to have", it's absolutely crucial for their mental health. I talked about the systemic barriers marginalised communities face and shared some powerful stories of how we, as therapists, can create truly safe, inclusive spaces.

Our job as (counselling) psychologists or psychotherapists doesn't stop in the therapy room. I challenge everyone to step up, get involved in advocacy, community organizing, and keep self reflecting and learning.

If you missed it, the keynote was followed by a lively panel discussion. Our shared call to action was clear: we’ve duty to integrate social justice into everything we do, personally and professionally, to build a more equitable world.

The webinar and round table discussion was hosted by the Global Counselling Psychology Forum (GCPF) on the 30th of April 2025. This gathering is aimed at encouraging dialogue, exploring current challenges, and empowering mental health professionals to integrate social justice principles into their practice.
