Queer Men & Masculinity
Group Therapy
IN-PERSON • DUBLIN CITY CENTRE • TUESDAY EVENINGS
-

Beyond the Surface
Navigating the world as a queer man or masculine person comes with unique, often unspoken layers of complexity. Whether it is the pressure to perform a certain type of masculinity, the isolation of navigating transition, or the challenge of finding genuine intimacy outside of sexualized spaces, you do not have to carry it alone.
This is a therapeutic process group. Unlike a drop-in social circle, this is a closed, confidential, and therapeutic space designed to help you move beyond surface-level conversation with other men/masculine folk.
Guided by Dr Tim van Wanrooij, we combine Emotion Theory, Social Justice principles, and Interpersonal Process-work to explore how we relate to ourselves, each other, and the world around us.

The Power of this Group: Why Join?
The power of group therapy lies in connecting with others who genuinely understand your struggles without you having to explain the basics. Participants in this group not only gain a sense of community but also find:
Belonging: A non-judgmental setting where your unique identity and experience are welcomed and celebrated.
Solace & Validation: Alleviate the sense of being misunderstood or coping with micro-aggressions in isolation.
Resilience: Learn from the coping strategies of fellow group members who are navigating similar paths.
-

Who Is This For?
Who Is This For?
This group is intentionally designed to hold space for a diversity of masculine experiences. You are welcome here if you identify as:
- A Queer Man (Cisgender or Transgender)
- A Trans-Masculine person
- A Non-Binary person navigating masculinity
Whether you are exploring your gender identity, looking to dismantle "toxic" masculinity, or simply seeking a space where you don't have to explain the basics of your lived experience - this space is for you.
-

Focus & Confidentiality
Confidentiality and trust are fundamental aspects of group therapy and are established with the collaboration of all participants to ensure a space in which all feel comfortable sharing.
From this foundation, we strive to create a "Brave Space." Real growth happens when we step slightly outside our comfort zones to challenge internalised shame and risk vulnerability.
As a process group, the agenda is not set by a textbook but by you. While Dr Tim may suggest common themes -such as navigating relationships, positive masculinity, the impact of injustice or life in Ireland as a queer person- ultimately, the group decides its focus. The work is to explore the topics that the members themselves decide to bring into the light.
Apply to a Group
-
Because the group dynamic is powerful, we ensure a diverse group of people.
Step 1: Submit the application form below.
Step 2: A free 30-minute consultation with Dr. Tim. This is a two-way street to ensure the group aligns with your goals and life stage.
Step 3: Pre-Group Measures. You will be invited to share your specific hopes, fears, and wellbeing baselines so we can tailor the space to the group's needs.

Cohort Based: The group is closed. Once we start, no new members join. This builds deep trust.
Mandatory First Session: Attendance at the first session is required. This is where we build our "Group Contract": the shared agreements on privacy, respect, and boundaries that make the work possible.

FAQs
-
We take this seriously. Confidentiality and trust are fundamental. Before the group is finalized, during the screening process, we (with permission) use first names to identify potential "dual relationships" (e.g., ex-partners, colleagues). We actively manage this to ensure no one enters the room feeling unsafe or exposed.
-
Peer support groups are vital, but they are often unstructured and volunteer led. This is a Psychologist-Led Therapy Group. Dr Tim uses clinical expertise to guide the "process", not just what we talk about, but how we talk about it. We actively work with emotions, group dynamics, and psychological theory to create long-term internal change.
-
While Dr Tim may suggest themes to break the ice, based on an understanding of common challenges in the community (e.g., shame, intimacy, gender euphoria, rejection, live in Dublin as a queer person), this is largely a group-led space. You bring the vulnerabilities and topics that are alive for you and connect with fellow group members on this.
-
No. Individuals at all stages of their journey are welcome, including those who are questioning or not fully "out" in other areas of their life.
-
We ask that you make a strong effort to attend all 6 sessions, as consistency is key to building safety and trust within the group. Crucially, the first session is mandatory. This is where we establish the ground rules and confidentiality agreements that protect the group. If you cannot attend the first session, you will not be able to proceed with the cohort.
For subsequent sessions: Your seat is reserved for you for the entire 12 weeks. If you miss a session, that seat remains yours (and cannot be filled by anyone else). As such, missed sessions are not refunded.
